The pxegrub provided in /tftpboot is buggy.
Reference to OS-3634 and OS-3635

Using a newer pxegrub in dhcp0 zones solves the issue.

When you say a newer pxegrub, you mean one from the SmartOS platform image that contains the fixes for OS-3634 and OS-3635?

This would be fixed by checking in a copy of pxegrub from http://us-east.manta.joyent.com/Joyent_Dev/public/builds/platform/master-20150409T042826Z/platform/boot-master-20150409T042826Z.tgz
