It's probably better to switch to EditorConfig in the long run?

Seems like a reasonable idea to get cross-platform compatibility. But I tried the editorconfig plugin for vim, and it replaced tabs with spaces in Makefiles when left unconfigured (but I didn't debug this further). Also they seem to reinvent the ftdetect wheel

In 2021 @michaelolbrich stated he already has an EditorConfig file for this:
