Ok, this was much easier than I thought, KaTeX already provides the API for this, it is just a bit hidden:

Hi,
I am using KaTeX via the
renderToString
function. Is there a simple way to makerenderToString
also return the height of the produced math (for example in ems)? Ideally also the width, but the width seems to be working dynamically, as my experiments with\includegraphics
indicate. I'm using\includegraphics
as a placeholder where I then insert my own custom generated HTML.\includegraphics
takes a mandatoryheight
argument, and in those cases where my custom generated HTML actually comes from KaTeX, I would like to be able to access that height. Thanks for any pointers!
