Note: If you are having issues with DJANGO_IMAGE_NAME then you are not at the latest available docker compose version. As a workaround you can just override the builtin value via DJANGO_IMAGE_NAME environment variable.

Additionally, if you have docker-compose 1.29 or below installed in your system or inside a virtualenv you can just uninstall it and use the docker compose command 2.9.0 built into docker directly.

Migration:

After updating to this version make sure to run make poetry-lock. This will ensure that your projects pyproject.toml is correctly set up inside the inner backend project folder too.

In addition to that you also need to run make dev-venv-path and then update the ENV_FOLDER environment variable inside your Dockerfile-django. This is necessary since previously the code that was supposed to create a symlink did not execute as it was incorrectly not marked as a PHONY make target (which made it not run as the file existed in the root level already).

2021-06-04

Add new configuration option build_in_ci. Currently, this defaults to no however the plan is to make building images in CI the default sometime in the future.

The main changes to deployments are:

  • Code is checked out to /srv/<project>/repository
  • Runtime lock/config files are still in /srv/<project>
  • docker-compose.yml is copied from repository folder to /srv/<project> based on compose_file ansible variable value
  • Images are pulled from a docker registry instead of being built in the server during a deploy

Migration

To migrate an existing deployment to this version just make the following changes in the server prior to the deployment (note: no need to turn the application off). First you need to move the project repository folder to the correct inner directory:

Also make sure there are no changes in the working directory as these will get reverted during deployment (and would not work anyway as images are built in CI).

Last step before doing the deployment is to move any deployment specific lock/environment files from the repository folder back to the root folder /srv/<project>. Out of the box these files are:

  • database.lock
  • .env

Make sure to also check for any project specific files you may have added yourself.

After these manual steps you should be able to just execute the updated ansible stack, and your site should be accessible again once it completes. We expect the deployments themselves to be faster with this method as building the images was the most time-consuming part of the deployment process.

2018-12-06

Breaking: This version includes a breaking change which removes support for locally stored media files. The media files will be stored in a CDN and we have builtin support for both Amazon S3 and Google's Cloud storage. This change is done to simplify moving to Kubernetes in the future.
